GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 12TH October.
This coming weekend sees the annual international scouts'
Jamboree On The Air during which scout groups around the world use
amateur radio to communicate with one another. Many amateur radio
clubs and individual amateurs are approached each year to assist
scout groups in the UK with their participation in JOTA. Many of the
groups regularly apply for special event callsigns and this year the
RSGB has issued over 350 special GB callsigns for the JOTA weekend.
Because of the large number of special calls, it's not possible to
give details of individual stations' operation this week. Suffice to
say that there will be plenty of activity on all bands.
Groups that are taking part in JOTA this year may like to know
that they can obtain a souvenir list. The list is available free of
charge from the badge secretary:-
Mr. J. I. Batley G8TKU,
3 Folldon Avenue,
SUNDERLAND,
SR6 9HP.
on receipt of a 6" by 8" 24 pence stamped addressed envelope.
The second Bristol rally takes place next Sunday, 19th October,
at the Hartcliffe Youth and Community Centre, Hareclive Road,
Hartcliffe, Bristol.
The rally opens at 10:00am and features all the usual traders,
with an increase of 40 percent floor space over last year's event.
There will be full refreshment facilities and talk-in on S22 by the
special event station GB2BRR. The special callsign will also be
active on HF as a demonstration of amateur radio. Details from Mark
G4KUQ on 0272 716093 or Colin G4SQQ on 0272 508451.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
Unfortunately, some details were not available this week but
there was an increase in solar flux levels during the period between
the 29th September and the 2nd October. This came as a surprise
after the recent run of zeros. The solar flux levels rose to 72
units by the 2nd, which is the highest level since July. The average
for the period was 71 units. The geomagnetic A index was unsettled
until the 1st and then became very unsettled, with a level of 18
units. the average for the period was 11 units, which overall was
an improvement on the very unsettled levels over the past three
weeks. However, the more northerly stations have still been
affected, especially during the hours of darkness.
The mean sunspot number RI for September was 3.9, with a
maximum of 13 on the 7th and zeros between the 12th and 28th. The
Inda index for the period 22nd to 28th September was up to sub storm
level, particularly on the 23rd. On that date a level of 55 was
recorded.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The F2 critical frequency daily highs averaged 5.5 MHz overall
- they declined from 6.1 MHz on the 30th to 4.6 MHz by the 2nd.
Levels are still declining but the rate of decline is now very slow,
probably because of the influence of seasonal effects. The darkness
hour lows rose from 2.1 MHz on the 29th to 2.6 MHz by the 2nd.
Overall levels have flattened out and the seasonal decline seems to
have died down.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies at South Uist are continuing to
decline and the daily highs had fallen from 5.2 MHz to 4.2 MHz by
the 2nd. The darkness hour lows have held up well and averaged 1.5
MHz. Spread F and total absorption were present every day.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
Solar activity is expected to decline this week as the spotless
face of the sun begins to face the earth. Solar flux levels are
expected to fall back to around 68 units. The geomagnetic A index is
expected to be very unsettled all the week and to reach sub storm
levels on the 15th and 16th.
MUFs in the south are expected to be around 16.5 MHz and will
possibly be slightly higher towards the end of the week. for the
north the figure could be around 14.5 MHz but spread F and the
expected increase in geomagnetic activity could lead to a depression
in darkness hour levels. This may imply MUFs of only about 5 MHz and
high absorption and spread F will be present.
The Orionids meteor shower which is actually made up of
fragments from Halley's comet will begin on the 16th and continue
until the 26th. The maximum will take place on the 21st. The radiant
is in the eastern sky until after midnight.
The Monday Night Award - organised by the RSGB's VHF committee
to promote activity in the 432 MHz band - ran for a 1 year
experimental period from April 1985 till March 1986.
The response to this and the increase in activity which it
promoted has resulted in the committee's decision to re - instate
the award on a permanent basis. The rules are similar and full
details will be given in the bulletin pages of next months Rad Com.
In the meantime a copy of the rules can be obtained from the VHF
awards manager, Jack Hum G5UM or from the VHF manager, Keith Fisher
G3WSN. It must be stressed that this is not a contest - it's
designed to promote activity in the 432 MHz band, give operators a
goal to work to, but above all to be fun. So make a note to be on
the band between 6pm and midnight.
The new 1986 Callbook is scheduled for publication at the
Leicester Amateur Radio Show on the 24th and 25th October.
The callbook is now published twice yearly and should regularly
appear at the first and last major rallies of the year - namely the
RSGB national convention at the NEC and the Leicester show at the
Granby Halls. Some of you will remember that the Leicester show was
always the place to get your new callbook, so we felt it was fitting
to tie in the publication date of the Autumn issue with the show
once more. The information pages at the front of the callbook -
which appeared for the first time in April - have been fully
updated, as have all the callsign details and addresses; but perhaps
the most important point of all there is no change in the price.
The October issue of Radio Communication was posted from the
mailing house in Maidstone, Kent last Tuesday, 7th October. Allowing
for the usual spread of 7 to 10 working days in the hands of the
Post Office, members should receive their copies by the end of this
week.
The Radio Amateur Licencing Unit has informed the RSGB that the
latest callsigns issued as of Wednesday 8th October were in the G0FW
and G1WH series.
